Robert Moore: rainfall September

I run a small weather station in Holywell and write quarterly weather reports for our community newspaper. Murphy's Law struck last month and when I downloaded my rainfall data from the logger it was obvious that the gauge had failed - showing just a few millimeters of rain from our local September monsoon. I'm trying to interpolate our rainfall from surrounding recording sites and I would be very grateful if you would let me have your total recorded rainfall for September. (My weather page www.robertsmoore.co.uk/carmel_weather.html)

Thanks in anticipation.

I live around 5 miles from Chester but I check this site everyday, it's easy to read and very informative. Thought it was about time I joined in to get the extra info.

Rik Hoddinott: Mr

I just found your Chester webcam after googling for weather cameras in the area.

I moved from Chester to Kentucky USA last year and love watching UK webcams to check out the weather.

Below is a link to my own webcam, it points roughly west towards the Ohio river and updates every 10 minutes.

Keep up the good work;

Raymond: Your weather pages

Hi,

I thoroughly enjoy your weather pages.  I think that of all the weather reports I see on the Internet for Chester yours is the most comprehensive and the best designed site.

I check the site almost every day from here in B.C Canada and know that I can get a reliable forecast and a view of the current conditons.

I'm interested in the Chester weather primarily because I have family living there.

Thanks, Raymond

John Butler: Mr

This is a very useful website. With a recent install of domestic solar PV at my home (close to Chester), I'm keeping a year-long daily log to report the effectiveness of the sun panels on my own roof. Obviously the array provides me with the most electricity when its nice and sunny -but suprisingly they make a significant amount in any daylight! I monitor the "light-value" of the sunlight using a photographer's, old-style, hand-held lightmeter. This is placed near the panels and points at the sky -and it very closely relates to the output readings from the panel array. You can follow me on twitter @mysolarPV.

Best wishes to you guys -I will mention your endeavours from time to time.

Chester Weather Station: Re: lowest temp

The winter of 1981/2 was cold!

According to the Met office the record lowest recorded temps for England:

-25.2°C      13 December 1981      Shawbury (Shropshire)
-26.1°C      10 January 1982         Newport (Shropshire)

Chester also had -25°C on 12/13 December 1981.

Geoff Nelder: for Simon

Sorry, I only just saw this request. I can say from stats I have from before 2000 that there is a peak wind direction from the North West, especially in the afternoons - largely from the sea-breeze. There is a counter flow from the south at night / early morning. We get by far more wind from the NW and the W and WSW than from the east. This data comes from wind direction readings from Queens Park High School.

Geoff Nelder: lowest Chester temp

Just thought folk would be interested that the lowest temperature I recorded was -20.7 C on Jan 11th 1982 - recorded at 0900hrs at Queen's Park High School. On the same day I'd recorded -22.0 C at Lache Hall Crescent at 0840 hours. Both thermometers are PSI certified minimum (alcohol in glass) thermometers. The one in my garden is rather sheltered hence tht lower temp but maybe typical of suburban microclimates.

Sadly, QPHS no longer take observations though they are at West Cheshire College in Handbridge.

Simon Neal: Average wind direction

Hi

I live in Handbridge. I'm trying to get some idea of where the wind "usually" blows from in the locality. I'm trying to think about the impact of a commercial kitchen exhaust system on my home. Planning application is in at the moment for a new take away in Queens Park View, with the stink stack planned for 10m away from my back door. Anyone have the data?

Geoff Nelder: and

Your rain is also showing 0.5mm. But there has been none for days. I can only surmise that your gauge has been the recipient of a lawn sprinkler!

Saturday, 22 May 2010

Geoff Nelder: temperature error today?

22 nd May 2010 at 1720 you have your temp at 28.2C but mine is 25.5

Mine are PSI certified mercury thermometers (Max /min, wet / dry bulbs) and an electronic temperature sensor with radio output. All are in a Stevenson screen at the correct height.

Until today your temperatures and mine have always been within one degree and often equal. I am in Lache Hall Crescent so not far enough from you for microclimate effects unless your instruments are in a hot spot.

It would be good to have a photo or diagram of your set up.

Best

Geoff

Geoff Nelder: site changes

Really like the new look.

Just for info, I created and read the met station at Queens Park High School from 1978 to 2002. We used PSI certificated instruments until 1995 when an automated station was set up on the roof. I used to enjoy being on the roof clearing leaves and a nest from the rain gauge or calibrating the anemometer. Sadly since I left QPHS the computer has been disconnected. The instruments remain on the roof, gathering data and no one to read them...

Helen Makin: FEED THE BIRDS

Don't forget to feed the birds as the weather is so cold. Nuts, seeds, fruit, dried fruit, bread, cake, suet treats, seeds and meal worms are all gobbled up by the birds in my garden. Don't forget some water too.
